Rome: Colosseum, Forum, National Monument, and Spanish Steps

There happened to be a strike the day we had tickets for the Colosseum and Forum.  We had to wait it out in the heat for a few hours.  Three hours to be exact.

 We made it inside!
Jill braided my hair as the temperature climbed.  Italy had record breaking heat the week we were there.

This is the underground part of the Colossuem.  There was a wood floor that covered it.  Our tickets to see the underground were forfeited because of the strike.

Here's the Forum across the street where all the political meeting and markets were held.

 Resting from the heat.
A pagan church turned Christian and the National Monument in the background.

After the Forum and lunch at a little outside cafe, we stopped by the National Monument, a sacred place of worship that memorializes the unknown soldier. We were not aware of this and had a guard get after us for goofing around.  Oops.

From there, we walked to the Trevi Fountain (under construction) and Spanish Steps

Rome is full of amazing sites to see and history to learn.  How lucky we were to be able to explore the birthplace of civilization.
